ESSENZ – STERNE DER RHÖN

FIRST A BOOK. THEN TWO FLOORS OF MUSEUM SPACE.

Frank Kayser’s self-published book ESSENZ — STERNE DER RHÖN became the artistic and dramaturgical foundation for the exhibition at the Vonderau Museum Fulda the following year. Its visual world moved from the page into 200 square metres across two floors.

Landscape, nature and people appear in large-scale photographs — sometimes quiet, sometimes provocative, never decorative. Fire, water, earth and air structure both the book and the exhibition, turning a familiar region into a spatial journey through the Rhön as it had rarely been seen before.

ERST EIN BUCH. DANN ZWEI ETAGEN MUSEUM.

Landschaft, Natur und Menschen erscheinen in großformatigen Fotografien — manchmal still, manchmal provokant, niemals dekorativ. Feuer, Wasser, Erde und Luft gliedern Buch und Ausstellung und machen aus einer vertrauten Region eine räumliche Reise durch eine Rhön, wie man sie zuvor kaum gesehen hatte.

THE BOOK TAKES OVER THE MUSEUM.

ESSENZ announces its arrival across the façade of the Vonderau Museum Fulda.

THE RHÖN SITS DOWN TO DINNER.

People, rituals and regional identity enter the museum as lived experience.

NO POSTCARD. NO SENTIMENT.

The Rhön appears dramatic, weathered and entirely its own.

THE LANDSCAPE TURNS DARK.

On the black wall, forest, weather and memory gain physical weight.

FOREST. FISH. FOOD CHAIN.

Nature and human intervention face one another without explanation.

THE ANIMALS LOOK BACK.

A rural scene becomes direct, unsettling and impossible to romanticise.

BELOW THE SURFACE, EVERYTHING MOVES.

Water, bodies and reflections dissolve into a restless visual field.

NOTHING HERE IS DECORATIVE.

Tools, hands and flesh reveal the hard mechanics behind regional tradition.

TRADITION HAS A SHARP EDGE.

Celebration, craft and slaughter coexist on the same wall.

FIRE DOESN’T NEED A FRAME.

A wall-sized eruption turns the museum room into heat and motion.

ESSENZ STEPS INTO THE CITY.

The exhibition leaves the museum walls and meets Fulda in the street.

CAUGHT BETWEEN BEAUTY AND DEATH.

A suspended fish becomes an image of precision, vulnerability and use.

THE TABLE IS SET. THE STORY ISN’T.

A familiar meal becomes part of the exhibition — hospitality, ritual and consequence.
