MORNING PATROL — HIGHWAY 74
On the Road with Chad McQueen
Five in the morning.
Palm Springs has not yet decided to be beautiful.
Good.
Gas station. Coffee. A few words.
Chad McQueen.
Not “the son of”.
Just Chad.
Someone you were always glad to run into, talk with for a while — and then realise that driving together was probably better than standing around any longer.
So off we go.
Out of the Coachella Valley. Highway 74 ahead, the Palms to Pines Scenic Byway. Desert first, then curves, then mountains.
The light is still milky. Palms slide past as dark shadows. The 911 ahead begins to dissolve between asphalt and morning.
Not entirely sharp.
Thankfully.
Memory does not use autofocus either.
MORNING PATROL belongs to that short hour before California wakes up. Before traffic, heat and daylight take over again.
Two drivers.
An empty road.
And a very good reason to get up early.
