Summer is gone.
With it the voices, towels, chairs, children, glasses, cars in the sand.
Cape Cod has closed for the season.
The house is still there, windows boarded, shutters carrying that pale vacation blue. Behind it, the ocean — too close, too vast, too indifferent.
Nothing is abandoned.
It is simply over.
The people have returned to their city apartments. What remains is wood, salt, light and wind.
And suddenly a holiday place becomes something else entirely.
Hopper without a figure.
No scene. No story. Just a house at the edge of the elements, frontal, silent, almost too clear.
THE OFF SEASON begins where the postcard ends.
When people leave, the coast belongs to itself again.
